GREENPEACE WINS AGAINST OIL GIANT
Esso lost its two-year-old court case against Greenpeace in France on 4 February in a victory for freedom of expression on the web and for our campaign against the world's #1 environmental criminal. As part of our "Don't buy Esso, Don't buy Exxon/Mobil" campaign, we developed a parody of Esso's logo with a double dollar sign: E$$O. (Esso is the name under which Exxon/Mobil trades in many parts of the world outside North America)
Esso took us to court for copyright infringement, claiming our Stop Esso website would "confuse customers" into thinking they were at a real Esso site. But the real belly laugh came when Esso claimed that our abuse of their logo would damage their "good reputation." This is the company that has done more than any other corporation to undermine the science and policy debate on global warming.
Thank you to the thousands of cyberactivists who sent letters and photos to the ExxonMobil board of directors, sent e-cards to their friends and colleagues, and defied the oil giant personally by contributing hundreds of alternative parody logos during our on-line design contest. This is your victory too.

PENTAGON COMMISSIONED STUDY PROJECTS CLIMATE NIGHTMARE
Fifteen years ago, some of us were warning of the impacts of fossil fuels on the climate. The science was less conclusive than today, but we, along with most climatologists, believed that the consequences were of such magnitude that immediate action was prudent. Today, environmentalists aren't the only ones saying that. The World Bank and the even the Pentagon have both commissioned studies which finally admit that our world is in serious peril, and the biggest threat to our future is not terrorism, but our own dependence on fossil fuels. In other words, "We have met the enemy, and he is us."
This year, the small circle of remaining climate "skeptics" -- scientists and politicians who don't believe that global warming is happening, or who refuse to accept a human element in its making, narrowed so far that Exxon/Mobil and the President of the United States may soon be the sole, shrill naysayers.

POSTCARDS FROM PATAGONIA
One of the major impacts of climate change is already upon us - the world's glaciers are shrinking at a frightening rate, as recently documented by an Arctic Sunrise visit to Chile's Patagonia region.
We've launched a cyberaction to bring this message home to politicians gathering for an international renewable energy conference in Germany this June. Send an e-card from here:
http://www.greenpeaceweb.org/patagonia/index.asp
and Greenpeace will print it out and freeze it in to an enormous block of ice that will be left to melt as the conference proceeds. About 7500 people have participated in this action so far - add your voice today!

PLEDGE CHALLENGE GROWS RAPIDLY
More than 5400 Greenpeace cyberactivists are now competing in the Pledge Challenge to earn a bunk on a Greenpeace ship scheduled to visit Iceland later this year.
Currently, the top ten Pledge Challenge participants have recruited at least 32 people each to take the Iceland Whales Pledge.
We've creating a reporting page just for you to find out how you are doing in the Pledge Challenge, both in terms of pledge credits, and how you are ranked compared to your fellow cyberactivists. Visit:

to see your latest results.
You can read about the Pledge Challenge here:

FOREST ACTIONS WORLDWIDE
As the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) conference took place in Malaysia last week, Greenpeace forest activists were active worldwide, from the Amazon to Indonesia, from Chile to Tasmania.
The CBD concluded with some weak but still hopeful agreements. You can read more about Kids for Forests and the CBD outcome here:
http://www.greenpeace.org/international_en/features/details?item_id=413028
and get more involved in forest issues at Forest Guardians here:
http://guardians.greenpeace.org
There is now a regular Wednesday forest chat scheduled at 8 pm GMT (3 pm east coast North American, 9 pm western European time) here:
http://guardians.greenpeace.org/chat
Please drop by.
In our most recent success, earlier this week, thanks to the Rainbow Warrior's persistence in monitoring the waters in Central Kalimantan, the Indonesian Navy expelled an illegal log vessel owned by the Vietnamese government. See:

TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT THE FORESTS OF PATAGONIA
A recent proposal by a Canadian multi-national mining company Noranda to build a large aluminium plant and hydro-electric dams in Chile’s pristine Patagonia would result in the flooding of over 10,000 hectares of ancient forest. Additional habitat would be lost to extensive road, port and building infrastructure threatening the survival of the already vulnerable species in the area.
Please write to the President of Chile today from:
http://act.greenpeace.org/ams/e?a=1254&s=gen
and read more about Patagonia forests here:

including our direct action at the Presidential Palace!

NO TO CALIFORNIA LIQUID NATURAL GAS
Stop the construction of the first on-shore Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) facility in California. Despite the state's attempts to become a clean energy leader by passing a renewable portfolio standard and community choice legislation, corporations are still trying to keep the state locked into its dirty energy past:
